Patent Regulations: Code of Federal Regulations

The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) brings together (codifies) by subject or area all the current federal regulations in effect. Regulations are then further arranged by title (volume) and part or section number. The regulations pertaining to patents are found at 37 CFR.

  • An up-to-date electronic version of the CFR is provided by the National Archives and Records Administration's Office of the Federal Register. The "official version" is also available, but is only updated once per year.

  • An easy-to use and search version of title 37 of the CFR is available from the Legal Information Institute at Cornell University.
  • Please note: The version of the CFR available at these sites is only effective as of a certain date. Newer regulations may not yet be incorporated into the CFR. Always check to see the effective date of the title of the CFR you are using.
